Last week me and my girlfriend went on a roadtrip from Los Angeles to San Fransisco and then taking the magnificent Pacific Coast Highway back. I had forgotten how fun road trips actually are. We passed big fields of fruit, vegetables and magnificent views of the mountains and the oceans. We ate well, went on adventures and decided to make a stop that I want to share with you. It was The Googleplex in Mountain View, CA. The Googleplex is the main headquarters for Google and an estimate of 40-thousand people work there. To get a job at Google you almost have to be a rockstar in your field. Walking around the Google Campus I started thinking. How do you become so great that a company like Google want to hire you? How do you evolve in your area so that your leave the competition behind? How do you become the best of the best? Let me share with you a few of my thoughts on the subject and maybe you can share yours. #1: Patience We live in a world where we want it now and we want it fast. The people that really excel and become the best of the best in any area have patience. They have so much patience that they will keep working on their dreams even a long, long time after people will tell them to stop and move on. Most of the best of the best people are simply the best because they have worked hard for a very, very long time. #2: Attention to details The greatest of our time in any field have a tremendous attention to details. If you want to be the best in any field you have to be ready to do what other people don't. You have to love it so much that you want to learn the stuff that most people ignore, the small, small details that from a far distance might not be seen but if you look closely will make all the difference in the world. #3: Environment To be the best surfer in the world you have to live where there is good waves, to become the greatest real estate agent in the world you have to be surrounded by opportunities, to become a great parent you have to spend time with your family. I hope you see where I am going. It is quite simple, to become the best you need to be surrounded by people that bring out the best out of you, the people that makes you grind a little bit harder, the people that say 5 more pushups when you already did a hundred and your hands are shaking. I know that you have succeeded at something at some point in life (big or small success doesn't matter) Think about what you did that time and try to do it more often, it will pay off! In todays article I will share some of the amazing lessons that I learned from training with and talking to UFC Champion Lyoto Machida. So this monday through a friend (thank you Oliver) I got the opportunity to come and train Karate with MMA-legend Lyoto Machida and his brother Chinzo. These guys are amazing fighters but most importantly seemed so simple and down to earth. The first thing that happened when I walked in the gym was that Lyoto Machida, a guy that has inspired millions of karate practitioners by becoming the first UFC Champion with a Karate background pulled out his hand and said: "Welcome, what is your name?" After that we had a great session of training karate for MMA. As an elite karate fighter it was a great opportunity to train with Lyoto and Chinzo to experience their type of karate and how they have made it work for MMA. I learned a few great things about my own karate, but most importantly I learned a few lessons from Lyoto Machida that I would like to share with you. How To Be Humble Like a UFC Champion1. Be Yourself
It was so easy to talked to these guys. Lyoto seemed so relaxed and humble despite being one of the most famous martial artists of our time. He spoke from his heart and was sincerely interested in listening to our stories as well. So like Bruce Lee said: "Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it." 2. Be Passionate About What You Do Despite training martial arts all his life he still seemed passionate about learning, improving and evolving as a person and a martial artist. Whatever you might do, make sure to move forward and never stop learning. 3. Move forward but don't forget your roots Lyoto explained that the move from Belem in Brazil to Los Angeles was very good for focusing. "In Belem, I can't go anywhere without stopping to talk to everybody. Here in LA its great for focus. I train and I go home." Even though they made the move to LA and that Chinzo and Lyoto is developing their own style of Machida Karate they never forgot the roots that their father gave them through traditional karate. Whatever you do, evolve and move forward but never forget what and who shaped you into becoming the person you are in the first place. 4. Family First While sparring with Chinzo it was great to see how Lyoto coached him and gave him pointers how to evolve. What coach can be better than your own father or brother? Always make sure to create a "family" of people that you can trust. That will make you feel safe and ready to perform at the top of your abilities. Lyoto Machida is one of the nicest and most humble persons I have ever come across which at the same time are so accomplished as an athlete and martial artist. It inspired me to be more humble, and it should inspire you too. You don't have to be cooky to be great. You just have to be great to be great. Work hard, smile, enjoy the ride, go after what you want and last but not least - Be humble like a UFC Champion. Please share this article if you enjoyed it. It has been a few weeks since you last heard from me. I have been spending my summer in Europe, more specifically in Sweden to visit my family, my love and my friends. Even though the weather sucked (pardon my language) there is nothing better than spending time with the people that truly love you. Even though it sometimes might be a little rough around the edges it is your family and they recognize you for you. After a few weeks with your family it is hard to leave them, especially my girlfriend, since we have lived togheter for the last five years and now we are separated for some time. So since I got to LA a few days ago I have been very sad, homesick and started to questioning everything I do. So why does this concern you? Today I want to be completely honest with you and also tell you about the other side of the coin that you have to experience in order to do great things. I am going to tell you the truth about being successful. Then it is up to you what you will do with the knowledge handed to you. We will talk about the truth that most people never see when they meet someone successful, but everyone who have excelled in some area of life know is there. The (Ugly) Truth About Pursuing Your DreamsSo what is the truth about pursuing your dreams? What do you need to go through in order to find that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Let me share with you just a few things that I have found, maybe you know a few more.
1. It is not going to be easy (emotionally) Everyone knows that it is hard to be a master of a craft, no matter if it is basketball, martial arts, coding or being a father. But what we seldom talk about is the emotional journey you will have to take in order to develop. You will sometimes feel like you suck, you will feel lonely, you will feel like a failure and a whole bunch of other things. That is part of the process and you will need to find a way to push through. 2. It is going to be painful The bodybuilders rightfully use the words "No Pain, No Gain". In order to grow you will at some point feel pain in all aspects of your life. If you look at the most accomplished masters of different areas of life you will see that their pain has shaped them to the persons they are. Usually people who have gone through a lot of pain and also mastered a craft are the great teachers of our world. 3. It will cost you There is always a price for success in any given area. I have learned the recipe for success and I am doing it right know so I know that I will accomplish what I want. The hardest thing for me that I am struggling with right now is not if I will succeed but if it will be worth it. Questions I am asking myself:
These are the questions that I am trying to answer and solve. Because whatever you are doing (even if that means doing nothing) it will have a price and a reward. Just make sure that the rewards you are getting for the price you are paying is aligning with what you want for your life. Ask yourself the question is the price you are paying worth it? This is the truth and no matter what you do in life you will need to learn to handle your mental and physical strength to be able to get what you want. Please share this article if you enjoyed it. Time to work again, I just want to chill and relax. Do you hate mondays? Then you should keep reading. I used to dislike (hate is such a strong word) mondays but I decided to change my thoughts. I decided to change my life and learn how to wake up every day (at least almost every day) with a smile on my face. Today you'll get some tips to make your monday, your week and your life a little bit better! Tip #1: Begin your day with a smile
Everything becomes a little bit easier with a smile on you face. It is not always easy to smile and to be happy. But look yourself in the mirror, bring out your smile and say, "Today is a great day!". Tip #2: What do you want to achieve this week? Drink a good cup of coffee or tea and write down what it is that you want to achieve this week in your professional life, in your personal life, in your relationships etc. Make up your mind to do 3 things today and get started. Everything is more fun when we you where you are going. And don't sell yourself short, dare to aim big. Tip #3: Learn to like what you do It is not always what you do that counts, but how you do it. I have met some very successful people in their professional life who does not enjoy what they do. On the other hand, I have met bartenders, waiters, cleaners etc. who love what they do. Regardless if you are not in the place you want to be today, go for it 100% and be really good at it, it will take you to the next job or the next success. Tip #4: Be grateful Wake up! You have a roof over your head and food on your table. Be grateful for it and say to yourself "I'll make the best of these great opportunities I have." Tip #5: Do something fun Make sure to start the week by doing something fun, it does not have to be something big. Go and work out, go to the spa, watch your favorite tv-show or cook a good meal. Starting this week positively, will increase your chances of having a great week. Please share this article if you enjoyed it. As a thank you I will give you two free chapters of The Goal Book. What do you want to win in? My passion and my profession is to study success, to study winning and what the habits of the happy, the successful and the winning people really are. I don't just study other people, I try it myself just to see if it works and to elevate my own life. With the risk of repeating myself I have succeeded with many things in my own life just by implementing the habits of other successful people.
Without further due here is: The 10 Habits of a Winner By the way don't miss the article: The 5 Habits of a Loser The 10 Habits of a Winner1. Works harder (than 99% of people) The people that takes their life to a whole nother level and leave the others behind in awe are also the ones that works harder, a lot harder than 99% of the rest of the world. Sometimes we want to believe that success is talent, and talent is success. The truth is that a lot of times talent is spelled hard work. 2. Works smarter (than 99% of people) If you want to be a winner, it is not enough to work harder than most people. You don't have to be smart to work hard day and night. A lot of people do, with none to very little success. The winners works smarter and knows when to pull the trigger and when to take a step backwards. The winners are those that gets maximum results with as little effort as possible. The winners works hard but also smart to get great results without burning themselves out. 3. Remains calm in stormy weather We all know that storms will come our way, sooner or later, no matter how lucky we are. The difference between the real winners and the rest of the world is that they remain calm even in stormy weather. The winners knows the difference between panic and fear. Do you? When you are able to control yourself, you can make the best decisions even in stormy weathers. 4. Knows exactly where he/she is heading Goals, goals, goals. Ask a winner where he/she is heading and he/she will tell you exactly where he/she is heading today, in a month, year and even in 10 years. Off course the winner knows that the course can change during the way, and are not afraid to change the goal if needed. A great way to learn more about goals and to create your own blueprint for life is to read The Goal Book. 5. Doesn't believe in shortcuts Shortcuts are great but we will never find the big champions on that road. On the shortcuts we will find the losers, the cheaters and the lazy ones. The real winners knows that it takes time to be great and that the more effort you put in the more "luck" you will receive. The winners life gets easier and easier for every day because a winner constantly evolves in every area of life. He/she is willing to do the uncomfortable today and tomorrow to get the comfortable life in the near future. 6. Studies everything
The winners are the students of life. They can become a better investor by studying a farmer or run faster by studying a kid playing. It might sound strange but the real winners can connect dots that others can't and are not afraid to learn from everybody, everyday and every time. But they are also so smart to know when to listen and when to trust themselves. 7. Doesn't believe in failure As the popular song by Lukas Graham states: "I can only see my goals, I don't believe in failure." A winner is like everyone else afraid to fail, but he/she finds the courage to do it anyway. And when the winner falls of the horse (fails), he/she raises up faster with new knowledge to become better the next time. The winner doesn't give up and have realized that it is part of the learning and winning process of life. 8. Have a heart like a lion To have a heart like a lion means to never ever give up and stay strong when needed. But also to show love and affection. The winners hearts are big and courageous in the toughest of times. Everybody can win when the sun is shining, but it is only the winners that can defy the hardest of obstacles and win when all odds are against them. 9. Is bulletproof to opionions (of sheep) We live in a beautiful world with encouraging people. But there is also a few "sheep" out there. The sheep are the ones that are jealous and cowards. They love to see you fail and love to give you advice that has no knowledge or good intentions. A winner is bulletproof to this. The winner knows that the sheep are not to be listened to. Instead the winners focus all their attention on the things in life that elevates life and takes them forward. 10. Does all the work behind the lights (for many years) A real winner has his/her motivation in the heart. He/she doesn't need any lights to shine on him/her to get motivated. The true champion lives in his/her own world and are ready to do all the work behind the lights for many, many years, before no one knows his/her name. When the day comes for the winner to actually succeed in the real world, he/she is not surprised. The winner knew all along what he/she was made of and would do it all over again if necessary. Use these habits to become a winner in your own life, on your own terms! Please share this article if you enjoyed it. As a thank you I will give you two free chapters of The Goal Book. "There is a big difference of losing temporarily and being a loser." Before we dive in to todays article I want to tell you that I don't believe that there are real losers out there, I only believe that there is a lot of people that consistently make the wrong choices and with a little bit of guidance they can actually turn their whole life around. By learning and applying knowledge in my own life I have managed to go from the losing to the winning column (in my mind I never felt like a loser and that was what kept me going as an athlete until I found the right recipe for winning)! Definition of a loser (according to Merriam-Webster): 1: a person or thing that loses especially consistently 2: a person who is incompetent or unable to succeed; also : something doomed to fail or disappoint Almost always I write posts about what you should do but today I want to adress some of the traits that "losers" have on a consistent basis just to show you that these are just traits and not something permanent. No matter if you have them or not you can always change for the better and improve your life, happiness and success. Be honest to yourself (sometimes the truth hurts) and move forward to change the bad habits in your own life. I can't promise you that it will be easy, but I can promise you that it will be worth it! The 5 Habits of a Loser1. Listens to everyones advise The other day I had a lecture about goal settings. After the lecture one of the attendants came to me with a whole list of advise to improve my lecture. Instead of focusing on my message he had been focused on judging my performance during the whole lecture. After he had given me all his advise I asked him if he was a public speaker. The answer was no. So the question is, should I listen to him? Or should I listen to the speakers that are actually 5-10 years ahead of me in their career? Take advice and be humble but be careful to listen to everybody's advise. A lot of people will try to give you advice without even knowing anything about the specific area. The losers listens to everybody and the winners listens to the people that knows what they are talking about. 2. Chases to many things at one time "If you chase two rabbits, you will not catch either one." People that loses constantly almost always focus on to many things at one time. They do a lot of things halfway with poor results. The winners in life, do one thing a a time (off course there are exceptionally strong-minded people that can handle many things at one time, but they are rare). A winner knows that you don't have to do everything but you need to do one thing with 100% focus. 3. Changes direction to soon Do you change direction as soon as something go wrong? Many times in life the people that won't get the results they want change direction to soon and start questioning what they do way to early. It takes time to get results and you need to be patient and keep moving forward, doing the same thing over and over again before you will se the results showing up in your life. 4. Makes the same mistake over and over I meet a lot of people that complain over their lives while drinking the same beer, eating the same burger and thinking the same thoughts. They never learn from their mistakes and go forward. If we look at the winners, they make a mistake once or twice and learn and never do it again. Some exceptional winners even see others peoples mistakes and learn from them so that they don't even have to make them theirselves. 5. Has a negative inner voice Losing people almost always have a poor mental strength, Even if they are not bad at what they do, they tell themselves that they are. In contrary the winners in life have a positive inner dialogue with themselves. As the greatest boxer of all time Muhammad Ali said (may he rest in peace): "I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was." Now the question is? What is your next step? Don't just read this article and forget about it, write down three things you can do to improve your life (don't wait, do it now). If you want a little more help with your dreams, you should take my 100 % FREE 7-Day Goal Book Challenge. Check it out here “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” Most of us know the difference between eating healthy and eating unhealthy. We know that a salad would probably do us better than a hamburger. We know that drinking sodas are worse than water because they contain a lot of sugar. We know that fruits are better than candy. Even if we choose the unhealthy, we at least know that it is the wrong decision. When it comes to our brain and feeding it with the right knowledge and thoughts unfortunately I meet so many people that do it in the wrong way. Let me explain. All of us have an inner conversation with ourselves (if you go to Venice Beach you might even catch a fellow or two that actually have their inner conversation out loud). The inner conversation contains worries, tasks, secrets, dreams, problems, solutions etc. Research shows that 90-95 % of our thoughts and inner conversation are exactly the same as they were yesterday. So before we move any further answer this question: Are most of your thoughts positive or negative? If most of your thoughts are positive, great! Keep it up, you are probably a happy and fulfilled person that dare to go after what you want. If most of your thoughts are negative you are probably living a life that is thousands of miles from your full potential. Don't worry, you can change your thoughts and you can change your life. Let me give you a few tools that I have used in the past to evolve as an athlete (World Medalist), author and entrepreneur. ExerciseGet a pen and paper and do the following exercise. Do it now! Keep working on this for at least ten days. It will help you to achieve your goals in the future and create a healthier and more balanced life.
In this way, you slowly but surely change your negative thoughts into something good and positive that brings you ahead in life. Although it’s important to have patience. It won’t work immediately, but by doing your homework, you will eventually have trained your mind to think the thoughts that enhances your quality of life and brings you closer to your goals. Another exercise for you who ponders a lot is to once again get a pen and paper. Write down your thoughts, no matter how ugly and weird they are. Write down everything you think and feel for about 20 minutes. Both positive and negative. Don’t judge the thoughts, just write them down. When you're done, go through what you have written. The thoughts you don't like, you cross over. Before you finish this exercise, read the thoughts that are left (those that are not crossed out) three times. For those of you who are new to working with yourself these exercises may feel strange at first, but do them with an open mind and give it a real shot. You will see the benefit it has for your mind. If you want to learn more about this and make your own blueprint for a fulfilled and successful life closer to your dreams.
